I have a dear blog friend, Charlotte, whose posts often move me. Recycled Napkin Rings by Charlotte Lyons
Last year I confessed that I don’t do the heavy cooking at Thanksgiving. I made the pies and focused on the table setting instead. One of my simple place card projects—made from scraps—proved very popular with readers. With the holidays approaching again, I wanted to share a quick, simple papercraft that’s perfect for busy hosts and keeps you out of the way of the serious cooks.
The materials are likely already in your recycling. These napkin rings are made from paper towel rolls. If you keep them on hand, flatten a roll and cut 2-inch sections with a utility knife or scissors. Leaving the pieces slightly flattened helps them sit neatly on the table rather than rolling. Decorate each ring with pretty paper scraps—sheet music, old handwriting, or patterned paper work beautifully.
Add a guest’s initial clipped from an old book, or glue on a short phrase. A ribbon can create a colorful band to which you can attach a name or small note. Kitchen twine or baker’s twine wrapped several times around the ring also looks charming and rustic.
Once you start, the ideas are endless. Use wallpaper scraps, yarn, fabric, buttons, letter tiles, small photo cutouts, lace, charms, or natural finds like small pinecones and dried flowers. Personalize a ring with a tiny brooch for a beloved aunt, or a small charm for dad. A little sailing pin could suit a nautical table theme, while a vintage piece of jewelry can make a lady feel special.
These recycled napkin rings are fast, inexpensive, and charming. They add a personal touch to any table and are a great way to use up small scraps and found objects. Make a set in an afternoon and customize each one to reflect the season or your guests’ personalities.
