Awhile back I had a Home Depot gift card from a return and decided to spend it in the garden center. That’s where I found this Fiddle Leaf Fig. I don’t have a green thumb, but I’ve always loved plants—my mom and grandmother kept plants indoors and out, so they feel like home to me.
I love the large, glossy dark green leaves and the sculptural look they give the room. The tree was pruned into a single-trunk shape, which makes it feel like a small indoor tree rather than a bushy houseplant.

The plant fit perfectly in the basket we used for our woodland Christmas tree, so I used that for now. I considered an old decorative pot but didn’t have one available. To protect the basket when watering, I set a disposable roast pan under the nursery pot to catch drips. I water it about once a week and, so far—after two months—it’s still alive, which feels like a win.
Some leaves have a few brownish spots along the edges. I haven’t diagnosed the cause yet—could be watering, humidity, or light—so I plan to look into care tips to see if it’s something I can correct.

I’m not certain the spot next to the fireplace is ideal long term, but with spring here the fireplace won’t be used as often, so I’ll give it a try. If it doesn’t thrive, I’ll move it near the front-room window instead. For now I like how it fills the otherwise empty corner in the family room and brings life into the space.
Other recent additions to the houseplant collection include the small plants on the coffee table and the teacup gardens I’ve been enjoying.
