Do you still set up a kids’ table for holiday meals? I remember always sitting at the kids’ table at family gatherings. Back then it felt like a special place to catch up with cousins we only saw a few times a year. Those meals are some of my favorite memories—full of laughter, lively conversation, and the kind of chaos that only a tableful of kids can create.

These days my son has fewer cousins, so our kids’ table isn’t as crowded. Still, I love the idea of making a special, memorable spot for children—even when they sit with adults. A little effort can turn a simple place at the table into a highlight of the holiday.
I searched for playful, practical ideas and found several easy touches that make the kids’ table fun and inviting. Here are a few favorites you can try this season.
Tablecloths and Placemats
Use paper tablecloths or kraft paper place mats so kids can draw, doodle, or write down what they’re thankful for during dinner. It’s an inexpensive way to encourage creativity and keep little hands busy while the main course finishes cooking.

Centerpieces
Centerpieces don’t need to be formal. Choose whimsical, kid-friendly displays like decorated vegetables with faces, candy sculptures, or playful arrangements that invite giggles. These lighthearted touches make the table feel welcoming and child-centered without a lot of fuss.

Placecards
Have the kids make their own placecards as a pre-dinner craft. This simple activity keeps them occupied while the turkey finishes and gives them a proud personalized spot at the table. Use sturdy paper, stickers, and markers so the cards will last through the meal.

Party Favors
Small favors are a great way to keep kids entertained during long conversations. Simple items such as finger puppets attached to sticks, small puzzles, or themed treats give children something to explore while adults chat. These favors double as take-home keepsakes that extend the memory of the day.
