With about 35 days until Christmas, now is the perfect time to begin planning decorations and festive touches that make the season feel special.
Have you started getting ready for Christmas yet?

Whimsical Christmas decor is about mixing unexpected textures, playful colors and natural elements to create spaces that feel joyful and inviting. Start with a focal point—such as a mantel, entry table or a simple branch arrangement—and build outward. A painted or lightly frosted branch placed in a tall vase makes an instantly charming display: hang small ornaments, paper stars or tiny stockings for a handcrafted look.
Combine vintage finds with fresh greenery to add depth: antique glass ornaments, mismatched candles, and wooden toys contrast beautifully with pine, cedar or eucalyptus. Layer soft textiles—plaid throws, knit pillows and a chunky rug—to make seating areas cozy for crisp evenings. String lights are essential; choose warm white for a classic glow or colored bulbs for a more whimsical, nostalgic feel.
For a mantel, vary heights and materials. Use garlands of mixed foliage, interspersed with ornaments and candles on different levels. Incorporate personal touches like family photos in seasonal frames or handmade paper garlands. If space is limited, a small tabletop tree or a miniature scene on a tray can provide the same festive charm without overwhelming the room.
Tablescapes benefit from natural elements and simple repetition. A runner of evergreen branches down the center, dotted with clusters of candles and a few statement ornaments, creates a cohesive look. Consider using branches as place card holders or adorning napkins with sprigs of rosemary for fragrance and a finishing touch.
Color palettes can range from timeless red and green to soft pastels or metallics. Whimsical decor often mixes unexpected tones—pale pinks, mint, and gold accents—to keep the look fresh and playful. Don’t be afraid to reuse items in creative ways: a bowl of painted pinecones, stacked vintage books tied with ribbon, or a collection of candles in varying heights can all be arranged anew each year.
Finally, involve family and friends. Decorating can be an activity—stringing popcorn, crafting simple ornaments, or creating paper chains adds memories to the season. Keep the overall approach relaxed: aim for layering and warmth rather than perfection. With a few thoughtful details and a playful spirit, your home will feel festive and welcoming well before the holiday arrives.
