I don’t usually browse HGTV.com, but today I found myself pleasantly surprised. Their kids’ room feature caught my attention — charming spaces, smart ideas and lots of inspiration. It felt more inspiring than many design shows and saved me time hunting through multiple blogs.
I spent some time exploring their gallery and resources and was impressed by the variety and thoughtful approaches to children’s spaces. There are plenty of clever design solutions that balance style with play, and I could easily imagine incorporating many of these ideas into real rooms.
Regular readers know I’m not a fan of tacky, over-the-top theme rooms. I prefer spaces that feel timeless, with playful touches that encourage imagination rather than overwhelm a room. You can read more about my thoughts on themed rooms in earlier posts where I discuss when a theme might work and when it can go too far.
That said, I appreciate that every family and every child is different. Parents should design rooms that suit their child’s personality and the household’s needs. If a child truly loves a bold themed piece, like a superhero chair, I wouldn’t judge — sometimes those special items make a room exciting and personal.
My personal preference is to create children’s rooms that blend classic style with whimsical details. Rooms that feel curated and enduring, yet still spark a child’s imagination, tend to age well and remain enjoyable as kids grow. A few well-chosen playful elements can transform a tasteful room into a magical retreat.
For this post I’m sharing photos I’ve added to my “LOVE THAT” file for kids’ rooms. Many of these lovely spaces were highlighted on HGTV and I wanted to save and share them as examples of how to achieve a stylish yet fun environment for children. If you’re looking for more ideas, HGTV’s gallery has a wealth of images and tips to explore.
Credits: These rooms were featured on HGTV.com. Several are designs by Candace Olsen; one was credited to a designer with the last name Saul. I couldn’t track down every original credit while compiling these images, but I appreciate the talent behind these inspiring kid-friendly spaces and will update credits if I locate them.
