This time of year sparks a familiar online debate: should we start decorating for fall now, or continue to enjoy summer until it truly ends? The short answer: there are no strict rules. Your home is yours to style however it inspires you.
Today I’ll share the small, intentional step I take each year as I move from late summer toward early fall. I’ve long favored a slow, gentle transition between seasons—an in-between approach that honors what’s passing without rushing what’s here.
I love savoring that in-between feeling. Instead of flipping a seasonal switch, I let the decor evolve gradually. A few subtle changes create a peaceful rhythm in the home and make the shift feel natural rather than forced.

On a beach walk last night I noticed fall leaves already scattered on the sand—something that happens here in August. Nature doesn’t follow our calendars; it simply moves toward the next season. Seeing those leaves felt like a gentle nudge toward the cozy months ahead, while the sun still warmed the air. That small moment captured exactly what I aim to create at home.
Whether you experience distinct seasons where you live or not, the feeling you create indoors is what matters most. You don’t need a calendar to tell you when it’s appropriate to shift your decor—follow the mood you want in your home.
For nearly two decades I’ve encouraged a “slow evolution” approach to seasonal decorating, a concept I explore in my books as well. It’s a way to enjoy the present while gently preparing for what’s next—without stress or a need for dramatic changes.

Even small adjustments can shift the tone of a room. Start by switching a few functional or decorative elements that bring comfort—soft textures, muted tones, or a single seasonal accent. Those modest moves create a calm, welcoming atmosphere that hints at the coming season without overwhelming the current one.
If you’re drawn to learning a thoughtful decorating rhythm, that’s exactly what I teach in HomeBody Gathering Place: how to evolve your home through the seasons with intention and ease.

Here’s my first step toward the season: faded blue-green hydrangeas on the living room mantel. They’re faux, but their soft, muted hues feel organic and effortless—perfect for that late-summer-into-fall moment.
I enjoy honoring each season through simple transitions like this. These hydrangeas make a quiet statement without clutter or fuss. They won’t leave crunchy leaves on your mantel and will look fresh for the whole season. The medium vase I’m using complements their tones and keeps the arrangement understated and elegant.
Below are a few mood boards and items that inspired me this season—small sources of inspiration to help you begin your own slow evolution toward fall.
