Tiny Cottage Remodel: Interior, Kitchenette & Backyard Updates

It’s been a little while since I shared an update on the Tiny Cottage, and there has been so much progress. While a few fixtures, finish work and some cleanup remain, the Tiny Cottage is nearly complete. This week brought many of the pretty finishing touches—the most fun part, in my opinion.

It’s shaping up so cute and it really feels like a tiny beach cottage. The Cottage has its own rear entrance (in addition to access from the garage and our home) and will have an adorable gate on the side of the house leading into the backyard.

The backyard is coming together as well. It’s a small space—my kind of garden—easy to maintain and a lot of fun to design. I’m very excited about the planting and layout plans for this area.

The contractors moved the built-in firepit back a bit to make room for the Tiny Cottage, so we’re happy it remains a feature of the backyard.

We repurposed the flagstones that used to form a patio into a pathway around the yard. I’ll be planting creeping ground covers, hydrangeas, roses and boxwoods along the path—more on that soon.

Inside, the Tiny Cottage feels light and cheery. The cabinet to the left will act as an extension of my parents’ kitchen, providing storage and a place for their pretty white-and-copper coffeemaker and matching toaster oven. A Frame TV will hang above, showing artwork when not in use.

On the large window wall they’re installing a compact blue fireplace—more like a small woodstove—with a vent running up through the ceiling. It will add a cozy focal point that I’m eager to see finished.

The kitchenette is utterly charming. The vintage-style stove hood and fridge were recently installed and are perfectly on-theme. I love the copper hardware and the small details—copper knobs and drawer pulls—that bring warmth to the space. The butcher block countertop has cutouts prepared for a white cooktop and a large white cast iron sink.

The cabinet color is Languid Blue by Sherwin Williams. The ceramic wall tile chosen has a subtle shimmer that reflects light and ties the cabinets and hardware together beautifully, adding depth and gentle color variation.

A new bubbling fountain sits in the garden just outside the kitchenette window so my mom can enjoy the sound and view from inside and from the new little deck. The garden will also include a bird bath, birdhouses on posts, and a white window box under the kitchen window. It should make a peaceful and pretty spot to enjoy.

This photo shows the view from our mudroom toward the small connector that links our garage, the Tiny Cottage and the mudroom. Due to fire code requirements we needed to add doors and create this little hall, so we’ve embraced it and affectionately call it the Tiny Hall. I love quirky small spaces like this; they have so much character.

We painted the Tiny Hall Benjamin Moore Smoke, a color that will also appear on the beadboard in the connected mudroom—a makeover I’ll share soon.

Star ceiling light

We’ll be installing a star-shaped ceiling light on the shiplapped ceiling of the Tiny Hall. It’s a playful, charming touch that suits the space perfectly.

There will also be a cozy bedroom area and a bathroom in the Tiny Cottage; I don’t have photos of those spaces yet but will share them when available. I hope you enjoyed this peek at the latest progress around here—more updates and a full source list will be shared as things are completed.
