I gave our tiny guest room a quick summer refresh last week, and it feels great to welcome guests again—most are family, which makes it even more special. I’ve collected quilts over the years and love how a variety of patterns can make a small room feel cozy, charming, and inviting.
Use what you already have, or bring in a few new pieces. For this room I combined teal blue and white striped sheets, a white waffle-weave blanket, a reversible floral-and-dot quilt, stitched quilted shams, classic navy-and-white striped pom-pom curtains, and a fringed accent pillow. None of the items match exactly, and that mix-and-match cottage look is exactly what I wanted.
Mixing patterns is also an affordable way to refresh a space without replacing everything.
Here are a few simple tips to get started decorating with pattern:
If you’re new to mixing patterns, begin with a single patterned quilt or a reversible quilt that gives you two looks in one. Alternatively, start with patterned sheets and build from there.
Stripes are timeless and pair easily with florals, geometrics, or both.

A reliable approach is to choose one color plus white. Using different shades of the same color with white creates a cohesive, calm palette.
When you’re ready to mix several patterns, apply the “one color plus white” rule or use multiple shades of the same color to tie everything together.
If you want to pair two items of the same pattern, vary their scale—one large and one small—to keep the look balanced.
Let a bold pattern or vibrant color be the room’s focal point, and support it with smaller-scale patterns and softer hues.
Incorporating texture and details like pom-poms or tassels adds warmth and charm to a room, making it feel thoughtfully layered.

Room sources:
Stitched quilt sham and reversible floral quilts and shams were used in the room. Navy striped curtains with pom-pom trim, a white waffle-weave blanket, blue-and-white striped sheets, and an additional reversible floral comforter all contributed to the layered look. Faux stems or fresh hydrangeas add a finishing touch, and a camelback upholstered bed (or a similar budget-friendly option) completes the layout.
