Update: my new kitchen with a covered range hood!
If you enjoy cooking, use a gas range, or simply dislike the way cooking smells travel through the house (I certainly do), a quality range hood can make a big difference. In the last two kitchens I remodeled, I installed new range hoods, and they were game changers for both style and performance.
Although researching options can feel tedious, it’s important to understand ventilation choices before making remodeling decisions. Choose a hood that complements your design and provides enough extraction power for your specific range. There are helpful resources that explain ventilation needs and installation options, and discussing your project with a knowledgeable contractor can save time and avoid mistakes.
Style matters almost as much as function when remodeling a kitchen, and picking a look is the fun part. From the moment we bought this house I started collecting ideas for a kitchen remodel, and I kept coming back to the elegant look of a covered range hood.
I’d never had a covered hood before, so imagining a new design was enjoyable. While I haven’t finalized the exact design for my own hood, the kitchens shown here offer beautiful inspiration and design ideas to consider.

Black and gold hood for a dramatic, compact kitchen.
Farmhouse-style covered hood with warm stained wood for character and texture.
