Stylish Bedroom Makeover: Inspiring Design Mood Board Ideas

Bedroom elements on this design board in partnership with Serena & Lily

Hey friend! We’re making a few changes to our master bedroom. It’s a small space, but reimagining it has been really fun. The room worked well for us for a long time, yet I’m ready to pull the house’s design together a bit more. This phase reminds me of when I renovated my previous home — it’s exciting to start connecting design details and refining a cohesive look.

Earlier this week I shared the new wall color: a soft, subtle gray-blue that feels calm and timeless. This direction brings to mind our last bedroom, and I realized the look I’m pursuing reflects a style I’ve always loved. I enjoy exploring many aesthetics, but there’s one core style that consistently resonates with me.

Since my bed won’t arrive for a couple weeks, I thought I’d share the design board for the room. For years we’ve intended to buy a new bed so I could return my mom’s to her. When we moved, we ended up keeping hers and never returned it — now it’s finally time to find a bed that fits this space and our preferences.

Finding the right bed took a long time because I’m picky. I favor upholstered beds but most options didn’t suit the fabric, shape, or scale I wanted for our small master.

Cane Bed / Rug

The bed I kept coming back to is a wood cane bed from Serena & Lily. I appreciate that it feels unique rather than like every other bed on the market. The warm wood, the cane detailing, and the classic silhouette suit the room’s scale perfectly. I also love that it has a footboard—practical for keeping blankets and our pup Lily from sliding off at night. Those small details matter.

We selected a patterned rug to add softness and personality to the space. The whimsical design will help hide everyday wear and bring a cozy layer underfoot.

Standard Shams / Euro Shams / Linen Throw Blanket / Fringe Sheets / Chambray Tassel Pillow / Stitched Quilt

Our bedding plan is mostly white with thoughtful details: blue stitching on the quilt and fringe trim on the sheets. To introduce bolder patterns and seasonal variety, I’ll add decorative pillows—standard and Euro shams that bring texture and color. I love swapping pillows to refresh a room’s mood, so I’m excited about the versatility this setup offers.

The overall direction feels like a dream to me. Combining warm wood, light linens, subtle blue tones, and layered textiles creates a calm, collected space that still feels lived-in. I’m eager to share the finished makeover in a few weeks once everything arrives and is styled.

Working on this bedroom has also nudged other design choices around the house. As I settle this room into a look that truly reflects what I love, I’m discovering the same aesthetic language works in other corners of our home. Remodeling is rewarding, but for me the best part is slowly pulling spaces together so each room feels like a cohesive, welcoming part of the whole.

Is there a room in your home you’re inspired to update this spring? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

There’s a Friends & Family sale happening now, so if you’ve had your eye on pieces from Serena & Lily, it’s a great time to shop.
