Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone: Embracing Hospitality

Please welcome my friend Sandy from Reluctant Entertainer as my guest today!

I’ve been thinking a lot about comfort lately. I’m not a fan of winter, and the cold seems to bother me more each year. My hot tub has become a trusted refuge — it warms me, eases the aches that follow early morning runs, and offers peaceful relaxation. It asks nothing of me and gives me much in return.

When I think about entertaining, comfort is the first thing that comes to mind. Comfort makes gatherings feel effortless and welcoming. It soothes and reassures guests, creating an atmosphere where everyone can relax and enjoy themselves.

I want entertaining to be easy. I imagine a flawless meal, the perfect mix of guests, a beautiful table with the right lighting and ambiance, and conversation that flows naturally. I want guests to leave feeling refreshed and content.

But entertaining often pushes me beyond my comfort zone. Things rarely unfold exactly as planned. Small glitches happen, and I’m forced to adapt, learning to respond with grace and composure.

Being stretched looks different for everyone. For some people the challenge is simply inviting others into their home. For others it’s trying a new dish or improving their cooking. Many feel vulnerable about opening their door when their space isn’t pristine.

I believe part of what I’m called to do involves stepping outside familiar boundaries. Hospitality doesn’t follow a single rulebook — it takes shape differently for each person and each home. There’s no single right way to welcome others.

Leaving my comfort zone doesn’t come easily, but I’m learning to see it as a chance to grow. With time I’m becoming braver and more adaptable, accepting that imperfect moments are part of the process.

Do you find it difficult to leave your comfort zone?

What holds you back from entertaining in your own home?
