Spring Cleaning Guide: Practical Tips, Clever Hacks & DIY Recipes

spring cleaning tips 2024

Spring cleaning is here, and I’m sharing my favorite toxin-free tips to help you refresh your home from top to bottom. This season always inspires me to deep clean, simplify, and prioritize a healthier living space. Below you’ll find practical hacks, safe cleaning recipes, and the cleaning kit I rely on for a truly clean home without harsh chemicals.

Years ago I committed to removing as many toxic products as possible from our household. After being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition (Hashimoto’s), I learned how much cleaning and personal-care ingredients can affect health. Since then, protecting our well-being has been my guiding principle when selecting household products.

My aim is a “clean enough” home—but not at the expense of exposing our family to harmful ingredients. True clean means safe, effective, and non-toxic.

For many years I’ve used Thieves products for nearly all our cleaning needs. They’re concentrated, effective, and simple to use—so I don’t need dozens of different cleaners in my cabinets. Diluted properly, a little goes a long way and the cost per use is very low.

If you’re building a toxin-free cleaning routine, the Happy Healthy Home kit is a great starting point. It includes Thieves Household Cleaner and other essentials that cover most household tasks.

We keep our kitchen spotless. With marble and soapstone countertops in our new kitchen, we still rely on toxin-free cleaners to maintain their beauty without risking damage from harsh chemicals.

I’ll also share a couple of very helpful cleaning hacks for natural stone surfaces that make upkeep easy.

Simple ways to use Thieves Household Cleaner

  • Countertops and sinks: Fill a spray bottle with 1–2 capfuls of Thieves Household Cleaner and 16 oz of water. For tougher spots, make a paste with baking soda and the cleaner.
  • Wood and tile floors: Combine 2 capfuls of cleaner with 1 gallon of warm water. Mop with a damp (not dripping) mop and test an inconspicuous area first to ensure finish compatibility.
  • Fabrics and rugs: Thieves can be used for spot cleaning fabrics, leather, and rugs—always patch-test first to confirm colorfastness.

Thieves Scrub is excellent for sinks, tubs, and toilets—and it’s also my go-to for lifting oil stains from soapstone. Our soapstone is left un-oiled so it retains a natural blue-green tone. Oil from hands or products can darken the stone around sinks or high-touch areas. A bit of Thieves Scrub applied and rinsed lifts those marks and restores the surface’s natural look.

Scented household cleaners

Fragranced cleaners used to tempt me, but artificial scents can be harmful. Now I craft pleasant, natural aromas with trusted essential oils. Thieves has a pleasant base scent on its own, and you can easily customize it by adding a few drops of essential oils to your diluted cleaner to create seasonal or signature blends.

I use a concentrated natural dish soap for dishes and occasionally for surfaces like marble when diluted. It’s economical because we add water to stretch the bottle and still get excellent results.

Marble can feel intimidating because it’s porous, but simple precautions and gentle cleaners keep it beautiful. We use sealed, honed Carrara marble and protect it with cutting boards and mats. For stubborn rings or stains, a paste of natural dish soap and baking soda, covered with plastic wrap and left overnight, often lifts the stain without harsh chemicals.

toxin free laundry detergent

Laundry, cleaning, and stain recipes

A gentle, concentrated laundry detergent designed for sensitive skin keeps our family’s clothing clean without irritation. We dilute it to extend each bottle’s life. The detergent cleans well, leaves garments fresh, and is kind to sensitive skin.

We also avoid dryer sheets and use dryer balls instead to reduce chemical exposure. Simple swaps like these make a big difference without sacrificing performance.

Later in this post you’ll find a few DIY cleaning recipes using basic pantry items and gentle cleaners for common household tasks.
