Small Upstairs Hallway Bookshelf Ideas for Compact Spaces

The Inspired Room Blog - Hallway Bookshelf

Earlier this year I began searching for a small cabinet or bookcase to place at the top of our staircase. You can see this little spot clearly from the entry downstairs, so it felt like it needed something more than a blank wall to draw the eye up to the second floor. The area is shallow, so I wanted a piece that was light and not bulky, something with a bit of personality that wouldn’t overwhelm the space.

I found a cute, shallow bookcase online that seemed versatile enough to work in several places if it didn’t end up in the hall. I loved the X-shaped cutouts on the sides and back—the design keeps the unit feeling airy and visually light, which makes it ideal for a narrow landing like this.

Lately we’ve been tackling many small projects around the house that had been on our to-do list for ages. It feels great to make steady progress and cross little jobs off the list. One project I finished recently was a simple refresh of the master bathroom: the walls were repainted and the room now looks cleaner and fresher. Even small updates like a fresh coat of paint can make a big difference in how a space feels.

It’s almost unbelievable that it took us six years to repaint the interior walls of our home—some closets still need attention—but the change has been worth the wait. We finally said goodbye to that dried, fleshy pink paint that has haunted us for years. Lesson learned: if I ever consider buying another house with that color, someone please stop me!

The bookshelf I chose is available online. Art is by Between You and Me on Etsy. Decorative storage boxes similar to the ones shown can be found through major home decor retailers.
