Settling In: Day 9 — Embracing Autumn’s Charm

The other day I shared a quick cell phone snapshot on Instagram. It’s an ordinary view from my home that I see every day, but on a particularly wet and gloomy afternoon it reminded me how easily the darker days of fall and winter can affect our mood. I try not to let that happen.

I love the ritual of settling into the house during this season. For me, settling in means noticing the weather and adjusting my surroundings and mindset so I can enjoy the warmth and comfort inside. Paying attention to the mood outside helps me deliberately lift my own mood and fully appreciate the moment at home.

We’re lucky to have large windows that bring in light most days, yet when clouds linger and the wind picks up, it becomes a conscious choice not to be pulled into the gray outside. On those dreary Seattle days, I focus on the things that make home feel inviting.

When the day feels heavy, I start switching on lamps, lighting the fireplace, and bringing out soft throws. Sometimes I bake a simple treat or make another cup of coffee. Small, sensory comforts — warm light, a cozy blanket, the smell of baking — help transform the atmosphere and lift spirits.

As soon as I can, I curl up in my favorite chair or sink into the sofa to truly settle in. I cherish the coziness of the house, the shelter of a familiar roof, and the company of loved ones. Fall feels like an invitation to be present, to notice the daily blessings of home, and to slow down with intention.
