One morning this week, while sitting in our living room with my coffee, I noticed the light had shifted in a new way. After several years in a home you start to recognize how light changes with the seasons, but that day the sun slipped through the blinds and cast a pattern on the wall I hadn’t seen before.

It’s remarkable how a house can still reveal small surprises, offering moments of unexpected beauty even years after you move in—especially when you take the time to notice.

We moved to this island home four years ago. Since then, each season has left its mark—four falls, sixteen seasons—and the house has changed with us in both small and meaningful ways.
Our living room has evolved over time. We’ve repainted walls, installed new flooring, renovated the adjacent kitchen, swapped furniture, and rearranged the layout more times than I can count.
There have been stretches of renovation chaos and seasons when the room felt calm and cozy again. Each autumn it has taken on a slightly different look and feel, and each time it has felt like home.

Our lives have changed alongside the house. We downsized, became empty nesters, and settled into new rhythms here.
Over four years we’ve celebrated holidays, hosted family visits, welcomed a son-in-law, and now enjoy two grandchildren.
We also said goodbye to our beloved Jack, the Goldendoodle, last year. His absence is still felt in this home and in our hearts, but we are grateful for the three warm years we shared with him.
Bringing our puppy Finnegan home last year, and the arrival of our grandchildren, has brought fresh energy and the joy of new beginnings back into the house.

Through every change, this little living room has welcomed us. It’s the setting for quiet mornings, holiday gatherings, work projects, and the everyday moments in between.
Living near the sea brings a slower, more peaceful rhythm that seeps into daily life and makes this house feel rooted in the surrounding beauty.
Settling into a new home and community takes time. Building a sense of place means creating memories, accepting change, and making the space your own.
Creating a sanctuary is about more than arranging furniture or choosing the perfect paint color; it’s about embracing the rhythm of each season and making the home reflect your life.
