Last weekend I had the pleasure of hosting a Seattle Garden Party at The Home Depot. I had a wonderful time. My daughters, Kylee and Courtney, joined me and we spent the day meeting local families and readers, painting pots, planting herbs, and learning gardening tips from Master Gardener Teena Spindler. Amy Pennington provided delicious recipes that guests sampled throughout the day. The weather turned out beautifully despite an earlier forecast calling for rain, so the event felt perfectly springlike.

We welcomed several hundred visitors throughout the day, and everyone left with a charming pot planted with basil, cilantro, or oregano. Watching people express their creativity was a highlight — guests decorated their pots with stencils and Sharpie paint pens. It was a simple, enjoyable craft for both children and adults, and we kept making more. I stocked a few of the pens in my online shop for anyone who wants to try this at home. The activity was easy, fun, and a great way to introduce people to gardening.

The theme for the day was #SpringMadeSimple, which I love. Gardening can feel intimidating, but small projects like planting herbs or decorating a pot make it approachable and rewarding. I’m trying to grow more of our own vegetables this year for health and enjoyment, so events like this offer helpful tips and inspiration. The Home Depot hosts similar events throughout the year on a variety of topics, which makes it easy to try something new.

Teena Spindler, the master gardener, maintains a blog called Grow It Now and shares many practical gardening tips, including ideas for a wine barrel garden.

The first 50 guests received a canvas bag filled with quality gardening tools available at The Home Depot. A few new tools can make starting a garden more inviting, and having the right equipment helps you feel confident about taking on projects outdoors.
Attendees also received cards with gardening ideas and recipes from Amy Pennington. Her recipes and seasonal ideas are inspiring — I’m eager to try the blueberry oregano turkey meatballs she showcased. Her cookbooks include many garden-forward recipes that pair well with homegrown herbs.

This cucumber-basil lemonade was especially refreshing and popular during the event.

Thank you to The Home Depot for inviting me to host this delightful garden event.
