A few months ago I shared initial inspiration and plans for our already very nice basement laundry and craft room. The space hasn’t changed much since then—except for one big upgrade: WE GOT A NEW WASHER AND DRYER! I’m excited about doing laundry again.
When we first moved in our dryer died, and for the first few months we were without one. Not having a working dryer right away made settling in harder than it needed to be. Clothes and blankets ended up draped over furniture and piled on the floor. Towels and laundry felt limp and rough. It was inconvenient and stressful, and we were more than ready to fix it.
Just before Christmas we received an unexpected and welcome gift from Samsung: a redesigned platinum ActiveWash washer and dryer (model WA50K8600AV-A2). Their timing couldn’t have been better, and these machines have made a big difference for our household.

We’ve never been so happy to wash clothes. Having a reliable washer and dryer at home has moved laundry from a burdensome chore back to a smooth part of our routine. After a couple months, our laundry is under control and the machines perform beautifully.
With the piles managed, I’m excited again about designing the room. It already has great bones, and I’m considering ways to pull everything together—molding, trim, tile and fabric to make the space inviting and functional. In a previous post I shared my initial vision and inspiration for combining laundry and craft functions in this room.

This laundry room from Roly Poly Farm is a lovely example of how simple upgrades—trim, tile, a hutch and well-chosen textiles—can transform a basic space into a charming, practical room. The added hutch brings both storage and character.
We hope to add a traditional laundry sink someday, but the ActiveWash washer includes a built-in sink for hand-washing delicate items and treating stains, which has been incredibly useful. We made a short video showing how the sink works.

We’ve had front-loading washers in our last two homes, and while those machines were fine, we appreciate the larger capacity of these new Samsung appliances. Washing and drying comforters is effortless. I also like the redesigned LED controls that sit flush on top of the machine—they’re easy to use and give the unit a sleek appearance.
We still plan to use this room for more than laundry: it’s intended as a combined craft and laundry area. If we move forward with a separate laundry/mudroom upstairs as we’ve been considering, this lower-level room could serve as a second kitchen or additional laundry space for guests or renters. For now, it’s a spacious, bright room that feels like a real selling point compared with the smaller, darker basement laundry rooms we’ve had in the past.
Having a large, pleasant laundry space makes the task feel less like a burden and more like a manageable part of everyday life. We’re excited to continue improving the room with storage, finishes and design touches that make it both pretty and practical.
Tell me about your laundry room, past or present—what changes have you made or plan to make to keep laundry organized and a little more enjoyable?
