I have always been drawn to the color green. It isn’t just the approach of spring or St. Patrick’s Day—green has a way of making me smile and taking me back. My earliest strong decorating memory is the first bedroom I decorated myself around age 13: apple green walls with navy fabric patterned in white polka dots. I adored that room.
Over the years my rooms have changed. I moved on to a soft blue bedroom as a teenager, then to a space with white walls and gray trim. Still, that apple-green room with polka dots left a lasting impression. Even now, when I use green—like when I painted two dining chairs—it brings back that feeling of comfort and playfulness.
When I wrote about how everyone deserves a lovely home, a comment from Jo at To a Pretty Life resonated with me. She reflected on her teenage room and how early decorating choices often reveal what we continue to love. I appreciated her words because they reminded me that our past tastes frequently shape our present style.

When I look back, I see continuity in my decorating preferences. While I’ve adapted to new trends and my style has evolved, the core of what I love persists. Childhood favorites often resurface in subtle ways—color choices, patterns, or the cozy feeling a room evokes. (And yes, I can laugh at some youthful choices—mine included poster-covered doors—but those choices were part of the journey.)
Remembering the rooms and colors we loved helps clear away stylistic noise and reminds us why we’re drawn to certain elements. It can guide current decisions about what to keep, what to change, and what truly reflects our personality. Sometimes evolving with trends is refreshing; other times it risks steering us away from what feels authentic. Thinking about that balance is useful for creating spaces that feel both current and personal.
Do you remember a childhood bedroom you loved? Do you still enjoy the same colors and styles, or has your taste shifted? Reflecting on those early choices can help you decide whether to embrace a trend or return to what you genuinely love.
