Shopping for new pieces can be fun—especially when you’re excited about fall decorating or making your home cozier for winter. But rearranging and repurposing what you already own can be just as satisfying, and often more effective. Do you agree?
If you’re new to decorating, welcome. I’ll share my favorite decorating tip: a simple strategy I use over and over (which is why I moved my blue lamp into this room). If you’re experienced, this approach will be familiar—many of my room makeovers follow the same idea because it works in any season and in every home.

When I started decorating, I wondered if loving my home required constant buying. Why do some rooms look so collected and unique while others seem to echo the same trends? Do you need to redecorate every season, or can you create a timeless look without spending a fortune?
Some people do refresh with all-new furniture and seasonal decor, and that’s one way to update a space. But there’s another path: collecting pieces you love over time. This approach saves money and results in a personal, layered aesthetic that endures. It also makes seasonal updates easy—often by simply shopping your own home.

My favorite decorating tip is to collect pieces you love over time. When you build a collection thoughtfully, you can refresh a room without buying new items because you already love what you have. Choosing classic or meaningful pieces means your style won’t quickly go out of date. You’ll find that moving accessories between rooms or pairing older finds with a new purchase creates a fresh look that still feels uniquely yours.
When you do want to buy something, let it be intentional—an addition that complements your existing collection. Each new piece you add expands your options and helps you update a room without starting from scratch. Over time, these curated choices form a signature style that’s personal and adaptable.
That’s exactly what I’m doing in our current home, as I have in every previous home. Sometimes I bring in a new accessory, rug, or piece of furniture if it’s the right fit and the budget allows. More often, I enjoy rearranging and mixing what I already own until the space feels balanced and complete.

For example, I moved my blue glass lamp here from my upstairs office. I loved it upstairs, but this corner needed a round statement lamp that wouldn’t block window light. For a while a Tiffany-style lamp occupied the spot and looked lovely, but after living with it I decided it worked better in the other corner. Even experienced decorators move things around until they feel right.
The blue glass lamp turned out to be the perfect solution. It fills the corner visually but remains light enough to allow natural light to filter through. I do miss having it upstairs, but this location was the priority. I originally bought the lamp on sale a few years ago because it felt like me, and it now pairs beautifully with a blue rug I purchased around the same time.
Collecting pieces over time gives you options and helps you craft a layered, distinctive look. Pairing older finds with new items—when you choose them thoughtfully—creates a home that reflects your style and evolves naturally.
