I have always mixed light and dark in every home I’ve lived in. Part of it comes from decorating for all seasons and part of it from indecision about the mood I prefer—light and airy or cozy and moody. Mostly, it’s the complexity and balance of moods that appeals to me. An entirely dark house would feel too heavy, while an all-light, cheery home can lack depth, richness and contrast.
I usually combine light and dark elements within the same room, but I also enjoy letting different rooms embody different moods. A room’s mood doesn’t have to come solely from paint color: darker floors, richer furniture, antiques, textiles or painted cabinets can create that same moody effect.
Moody rooms suit certain styles and locations in a house better than others. In our home, the back rooms get a lot of natural light, so dark walls would look washed out there; lighter tones work best. Conversely, our bedroom feels perfectly cozy with darker walls. It has enough light to avoid feeling gloomy and is small enough to feel intimate. I love the depth it brings—Benjamin Moore’s recent color of the year even reminds me of our bedroom walls.
Where you live can also shape your decorating choices. In regions with long, gray winters—like the Northwest—some people prefer lighter, sunnier interiors to counteract the gloomy weather. I, however, prefer colors that harmonize with the local environment: warmer or grayer undertones that feel more at home here than the crisp, cool palettes you might find in places with brighter climates.
Choosing moods that connect the interior to the outside environment creates a sense of cohesion and comfort. That said, I wouldn’t want a house that’s moody year-round; I balance richer tones with warm whites and brighter accents to reflect light and lift the spirit. This balance helps the home evolve with the seasons and keeps it comfortable in winter as well as summer.
