This post in partnership with Serena and Lily

We’ve made significant progress on our master bedroom makeover. The new bed, bedding, and rug have arrived, and I’m really happy with how it’s coming together. You’ll also get a peek at the new shutters in this post; I’ll share more detailed information about them soon.

If you’re new here, we moved into our Seattle house about two and a half years ago. The small room designated as our master originally had yellow walls. While cheerful, it didn’t feel like the cozy retreat we wanted, so we planned a refresh to make it more personal and restful.

At one point we painted the room a deep plum that turned the space into a snug cocoon—perfect for the early days after moving and remodeling. As the house evolved, especially after a full kitchen remodel that set the tone for the rest of the home, we were ready to make the bedroom feel cohesive with our overall style.

My mom was ready to have her sleigh bed back, so I finally ordered a cane bed from Serena & Lily that’s been on my dream board for a long time. I love the classic silhouette, the cane detail, and that it’s the right scale for our 12 x 14 room.

Our previous bed felt bulky and visually heavy. The new cane bed is streamlined with a straight headboard and footboard, taller legs, and a lighter presence that opens the room. Being able to see the rug almost completely under the bed makes the layout feel more spacious and balanced.

The footboard is the ideal height: it keeps our pup Lily from tumbling out at night but isn’t so high that Jack has to clear it entirely. Small practical details like that make a big difference in everyday life.

The combination of wood, cane, and the white-and-blue textiles reflects the direction we’re taking the home: a subtle, clean, relaxed coastal vibe that suits our location overlooking Puget Sound. The palette feels cohesive and calming throughout the house.

The bedding has subtle, lovely details: patterned shams, fringe on the sheets, stitched quilting, and tassels on the throw. The whimsical Dhurrie rug adds softness and pattern while tying the room together. The sheets are deep enough to fit our thick mattress easily, which is always a welcome convenience.

We feel great about the progress. A few updates remain—such as deciding on mirrored closet doors—but overall the room is at a satisfying stopping point for now.

This room now feels serene, comfortable, and welcoming.

We also installed new shutters, which add a finished, cottage-like feel to the room. I’ll share installation details in a separate post.
