Master Bathroom Refresh: Quick Update Ideas for a Modern Look

The Inspired Room Simple Bathroom Paint Refresh - Before and After
This post is in partnership with Homewerks.

A couple of weeks ago I decided it was finally time to paint my master bathroom. We’ve lived in this house for six and a half years and had never repainted the bathroom walls. They still wore the original builder beige—faded, scuffed and tired from family life. It was definitely time for a refresh.

This room was the last holdout of the original builder color in our home. The plan had always been to update the bathroom at some point to better reflect our style, but life and projects got in the way. Since we’re now preparing the house to sell, I focused on a practical, efficient update: fresh paint on the walls and a few small touches to create a calm, spa-like feel without a full renovation.

To save time and expense we left the tile, cabinetry, fixtures and mirror as they were. Even a simple paint job can dramatically improve a space, and I added a few accessories to give the room a more peaceful atmosphere. The goal was fresh, clean and inviting—nothing elaborate, just a soft, spa-inspired update.

We have a large soaking tub tucked under a skylight, which makes it perfect for evening soaks. I surrounded the tub with potted plants, candles, fluffy white towels, scented soaps and a small bench to create a comfortable, relaxing nook. Simple additions like greenery and soft textiles can make a big difference in how peaceful a bathroom feels.

On the counter I added a glass-and-metal nesting table to serve as a small shelf for accessories. We hung white robes on hooks and introduced a couple of mirrors to add dimension. I also replaced disposable plastic soap dispensers with stone ones for a cleaner, more upscale look. We may add a frame to the existing mirror later, but for now the subtle changes already feel more refined.

A relaxing soak is even better with soothing music, so we added a tech-savvy upgrade: a Bluetooth stereo speaker bath fan from Homewerks. The round fixture on the ceiling is both a fan and a wireless speaker, and it includes a built-in nightlight that can glow white or blue. It’s controlled by a wall switch and a remote, making it easy to use while getting ready in the morning or winding down at night.

Our old fan was noisy and not very effective, so replacing it with a quieter, multifunctional unit felt like a real improvement. The Bluetooth speaker makes the bathroom feel more modern and enjoyable—playing music from phones or other devices creates a pleasant, spa-like atmosphere.

We hired an electrician to install the fan since we were short on time and not very handy, but the installation is straightforward and could be a DIY project for someone comfortable with basic electrical work. Our electrician liked the unit so much he went to buy one for his own home.

Now even our dog seems to appreciate the calmer vibe—there’s a short video of Jack the Goldendoodle relaxing by the tub while music plays.

If time allows before we move, I’ll share any additional updates. For now, the fresh paint, thoughtful accessories and the new Bluetooth fan-speaker have transformed the space into a brighter, more peaceful bathroom that feels ready for relaxation.
