Make a Statement: How a Bold Rug and Chair Legs Transform Your Bedroom

Last week I added a beautiful statement rug and swapped the chair legs in our bedroom.

I hadn’t planned to work on this room this summer — I was focused on the deck — but inspiration changed my plans.

Now I’m decorating the bedroom, and I’m glad I stayed open to the idea. Inspiration often arrives unexpectedly.

That willingness to change direction led to a room that feels fresh and personal.

NEWSFLASH: The new rug style is on sale in some sizes, along with other rugs I love. Prime Day can be a great time to find deals on rugs, so if you’re shopping, it’s worth checking out current sales.

Statement pieces make decorating more fun.

Below I share my thoughts about the new rug, a few decorating tips, and what I might add next.

Our new bed brought a whimsical, coastal cottage vibe to the room, and the rug feels like the perfect complement.

When I ordered the rug I wasn’t sure where it would end up, but it’s settled in beautifully here.

It even features coastal birds in the pattern — the moment I noticed them I knew the rug belonged in this room.

We’ll likely rearrange the art when we paint the room, but I’ll keep the birds — they always make me smile.

A room should tell stories and reflect what you love, so don’t be afraid to include pieces that spark joy.

Do you ever invent little stories about the art in your home? I do — seeing birds in the rug makes me picture them heading down to the water to join their friends.

Decorating tips and thoughts:

A colorful rug or any compelling statement piece can be a great starting point for a room’s color palette and styling decisions.

Try different combinations and take your time. It’s okay to experiment until the room feels right.

I love the pattern and colors of this rug — blues that read like denim, warm browns, yellow-golds, and a hint of mauve. Keep in mind that screens can shift tones, so colors may vary in person.

The rug’s tones also coordinate with other rugs I own, which makes it versatile if I decide to move it to another room later.

I’ll be testing different bedding combinations and will share what works as I settle on a look.

When you love something special, don’t be afraid to use it — it can define the room in a wonderful way.

Simple changes refresh a chair.

After the rug was down I remembered new chair legs I’d bought months ago. Swapping them gave the chair an instant, fresher vibe that fits the room better — a small change with a big impact.

Curtain panels

We installed checked chambray curtains and acrylic-and-brass rods a couple years ago and still love them. They were affordable enough that I feel free to change them if I want a new look.

We need shades for the French doors, so I’m watching for options that feel right for the space.

Furniture and lighting

We almost moved this chair downstairs, but our pup Lily loves it here and often naps on it. I move furniture around often and she adapts, so we’ll see what stays.

The wood bead ceiling light was installed recently and still feels right. I’m also considering table and floor lamps to complete the lighting plan.

Make changes over time.

We brought a white bookcase from our previous home that could be painted or left as is. The walls will get a fresh coat at some point, and I’m on the lookout for nightstands and possibly a dresser. I prefer to wait until I find the right pieces rather than rush decisions.

We’re enjoying having a small deck right outside the room — it extends our living space and connects the bedroom to the outdoors.

When we moved into this house, this room became the small primary bedroom I once dreamed about — now it’s our peaceful sanctuary.
