Laundry Room Makeover: Fixing a Broken Washer or Dryer

Laundry Room Progress - White Paint

Ladies, I’m happy to report that the dated pink wall color has finally been removed from another room in our house. Our laundry room had been largely ignored in terms of design since we moved in. It functioned well and served its purpose, but the walls had an unfortunate fleshy tone that made the whole space feel tired.

We decided a small refresh was in order. The plan focused on replacing the fluorescent light, dealing with the embarrassing state of the laundry sink (more on that below), and repainting the walls. Because the room is compact, we kept the changes simple and practical. It doesn’t need much to feel refreshed—just a few thoughtful updates and a fresh coat of paint.

My husband sanded and primed the cabinets last week and painted them a clean Dove White using the Benjamin Moore formula mixed in Glidden paint. Choosing a white palette helps the small room feel brighter and more open. We’ll likely swap out the cabinet hardware at some point, but for now the original pulls will do the job and save us some money.

We selected the Wallaby Flush Mount from Barn Light Electric in an emerald green finish to introduce a pop of color and character. The image above was digitally altered during the decision process, so the exact hue may vary, but it gives a good idea of the intended look. Replacing the fluorescent fixture with this pendant will bring charm and better quality light. With a large window providing natural daylight, the room will be bright and inviting without harsh fluorescent tones.

This new fixture will add personality to the otherwise all-white backdrop and create a focal point in the small laundry area.

For reference, here are the “before” views of the space. The photos show how the laundry room looked for years—functional but uninspired.

Our laundry room is located on the second level in the hallway near the bedrooms, which is a layout I really appreciate. Having laundry on the same floor as the bedrooms makes sorting and folding much easier than when it was in the basement.

Now for the sink reveal. The current basin shows evidence of many paint projects and accidental drips. Rather than spend hours trying to remove dried paint from an inexpensive sink, we’ll be replacing it with a clean, functional model next week. It won’t be luxurious, but it will be fresh and practical—exactly what this room needs.

We plan to hang the ironing board on the opposite wall near a small white glass cabinet where cleaning supplies will be stored. This organized layout keeps essentials close at hand and helps make the room more usable. Although this is a modest update, the progress so far has already made the space more pleasant to use.

There are still a few rooms left with that old pink paint—some closets and our master bathroom. The closets can stay for now, but the master bathroom is next on the repaint list. No one will miss the old color.

I’ll post another update after the new sink and light are installed to show the finished look.
