Winter, spring, summer or fall—where would you choose to live year‑round? For me, living near water is always the answer. Decorating in a lakeside or seaside style makes any space feel calm and welcoming, and it’s a look you can create no matter where you live.

The weeks between summer and fall are some of the most beautiful by the water where I live. Our backyard looks out over the Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, and this time of year the mornings turn cool and crisp, clouds drift across sunny afternoons, and evenings fill with pink-hued sunsets. Those moments are what inspired the lakeside feel in my home.
I’ve lived near lakes or the sea for most of my life, so the landscape has influenced how I decorate. When I think of my favorite style, I picture a late-summer day at a lake house or a relaxed vacation cottage by the ocean. That laid-back, cozy vibe is what defines lakeside style.

Good news: you can achieve that lakeside look in your home even if you’re far from water. It’s all about choosing the right colors, textures, and a few mood-setting pieces. To illustrate, we created two Lakeside Style mood boards using items found at Walmart—cute, affordable pieces that combine effortlessly to create a coastal atmosphere.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many charming lakeside-style items Walmart offers. When arranged together, they create an inviting, cohesive look. I ordered some of the accessories from our mood board for my own home—like the white lanterns you see here and a sweet bench that fits perfectly on my porch. A few well-chosen pieces can transform a space and carry the look from season to season.

Let your personal tastes guide you. Start with furniture and accessories that evoke a relaxed lake house—soft neutrals, natural textures, and nautical accents. Statement items like lanterns, woven rugs, or a vintage-style cart can set the tone without overwhelming the space.

The two white lanterns I ordered arrived last week and are ideal for my “in-between” season backyard. Their rope handles add a nautical touch that feels authentic and timeless. I love using pieces outdoors in summer and then bringing them indoors for fall and winter styling—versatile items extend the life of any purchase.

I also use an outdoor storage shed to keep cushions and seasonal items protected—practical storage helps maintain a tidy, welcoming outdoor space year-round.
