Last week we explored neutral and colored walls and I mentioned my fondness for wallpaper. If you want truly special walls, ceilings or furniture, hand-painted designs and textured finishes create a beautiful, unique look that elevates any room.
In our previous homes my husband and I have experimented with hand-painted stripes and even a Lord of the Rings mural in our son’s nursery. What we’ve always wanted to try is stenciling an entire room to mimic the effect of hand-painted wallpaper.
Note: I once attempted to stencil sea-life motifs at our beach house — it did not go as planned.
One of my sponsors, Royal Design Studio, offers a wide selection of elegant stencils. Many of their patterns evoke the sophisticated wallpaper looks used by designers such as Candice Olson.

Stenciling and faux finishing are excellent ways to highlight an architectural feature—or to create one where none exists.

I love the variety stenciling offers—from an all-over wallpaper effect to subtle flourishes that add personality. Combine stencils with textured paint techniques and faux finishing to transform a flat, plain wall into one full of character. The possibilities are nearly endless.
With the right pattern and finish you can create a truly unique statement in any room.

If you have the skill, a painted ceiling can become a stunning focal point that elevates the entire space.

I also adore the idea of stenciled furniture—this nest chair with a decorated back is charming and adds an artisanal touch to seating.

Stenciled floors can be dramatic and unexpected—a great way to add pattern underfoot without permanent tile or rug choices.

Royal Design Studio offers ideas, tips, stencils, supplies and instructional materials for stenciling and faux finishing.
Browse their catalog for inspiration whether you’re a novice eager to try a new technique or an experienced DIYer refining your skill set. You’re likely to find a pattern or finish that fits your home and style.
Right now I’m picturing all the places in my house that could benefit from a little stenciling or faux finishing. I should be packing for an upcoming trip, but instead I’m planning projects—such is the pull of design ideas.
