Sometimes I need to step away from the routine and go looking for beautiful things.
I don’t always have to bring anything home. Often I’m content just to look—though I admit every now and then something catches my eye and I can’t resist. I love to touch items, pick them up, and take in their scent.
I just need to linger for a while.
That simple ritual restores me. It refuels my creativity and renews my energy.
This past Saturday my daughters and I took one of those restorative days together. It turned out to be one of my favorite days.
We set out that morning with no agenda other than to find things that caught our attention.
We enjoyed a delicious lunch, wandered through charming shops—sampling candle scents and handling everything that intrigued us—and finished the afternoon with foamy coffee and big, easy conversation.
There’s something about time spent together like that: relaxed, curious, and unhurried. It felt like a small reset for all of us.
I love those girls, and I love days like that.
When was the last time you took a day or a weekend just to recharge? How did you spend it?
One of the shops we visited and photographed that day is Modern Mercantile in Poulsbo, Washington.
