So yesterday we talked about open storage ideas, but today I want to share clever ways to hide a TV. Some people aren’t bothered by a visible television, while others prefer to tuck it away behind doors or decorative covers when it’s not in use.
Which do you prefer: a TV out in the open or one kept behind closed doors?
Beyond the classic armoire, there are many creative solutions for concealing a TV whether it sits in a niche, is wall-mounted, or rests on a bookcase. These options blend form and function so the screen disappears when you want a cleaner, more intentional room aesthetic.
A pull-down vintage map is a particularly inspired idea — it becomes art when the TV is hidden and rolls away when you want to watch. You could use a pull-down bamboo shade or a roman shade to cover a niche or shelf and give the space a window-like appearance.

Barn doors are another favorite. Sliding barn doors allow you to hide the TV while keeping mantel and shelf surfaces intact — no need to clear decor each time you want to watch a show.

For a wall-mounted screen, a decorative frame can disguise the TV and make it feel like a piece of art. Framed screens add character and help the device blend with other wall decor.

Folding screens or hinged shutters are versatile and portable. They work well in rented spaces or when you want a seasonal solution that can be moved or stored easily.

DIY sliding tracks are a smart way to hide a TV in a niche. Using a closet-door track or similar hardware, you can create sliding shutters or panels that glide open and closed smoothly.

In our house we had a large recessed space above the fireplace intended for a TV. Instead of installing one there, we layered old cupboard doors and mirrors to disguise the empty niche and add texture to the mantel area.
That simple approach worked well for years, but lately I’ve been considering alternatives like sliding barn doors or other custom solutions that keep the mantel available for decor while allowing the option of a TV. I’m experimenting with a few ideas and will share what we decide.
Update: We later remodeled the fireplace and filled in the TV niche as part of a makeover.
