Raise your hand if you have dogs. Keep your hand up if you’d like a clean home and still enjoy furry companions. We have four doodles in our family; two live here full time and two visit. That means a lot of fluff, but we’ve learned practical ways to keep our home comfortable, tidy, and welcoming for both dogs and people.
Below I answer common questions I receive about living with dogs and maintaining a clean home. These are simple habits and product choices that have worked well for us without sacrificing comfort or style.

1. Do your dogs shed?
Our doodles don’t shed in the same way many other breeds do, so I don’t have experience with heavy shedders. Still, fur and fluff travel through the house, so we do manage loose hair regularly.
2. How do you manage the fluff?
Frequent brushing and professional grooming every six weeks help a lot. We also use a robot vacuum that keeps up with dust bunnies and loose fur between deeper cleanings. Routine grooming plus regular vacuuming reduces airborne fur and makes the home feel fresher.

3. Do you let your dogs on furniture?
Yes—our dogs are part of the family and they’re welcome on furniture. To protect upholstery and make cleaning easier, we use washable covers, sheets, or throws on pieces they favor.
4. Don’t they track mud inside?
Not often. We plan our outdoor spaces to reduce mud and tracking. Below are the steps that help minimize dirt coming indoors.
5. How do you prevent mud on their paws?
We keep areas where the dogs play as dry as possible by using bark or other ground cover over soil and covering tempting digging spots. There’s also plenty of hardscaping—patios and paved paths—so dogs have room to shake off before entering. In winter or after heavy rain we wipe paws at the door when needed.

6. Don’t floors and rugs get dirty?
We favor hard floors like wood and tile because they’re forgiving at first glance and easy to clean. Many of our rugs are durable indoor/outdoor styles that hold up well; we roll them up when we expect a mess. Accepting a little imperfection lets us enjoy dogs without constant stress over spotless floors.
7. What about accidents on rugs—how do you clean them?
Accidents happen, and we choose cleaners that are effective and safe for pets and family. We use a plant-based, concentrated household cleaner for spot-cleaning rugs and upholstery. It’s gentle, works well on stains and odors, and is economical because it’s mixed with water. For upholstery and delicate fabrics, always test a small hidden area first and follow care instructions.

8. How do you handle wear and tear on furniture?
We choose washable and durable materials when possible. Our living room daybed is covered with a twin sheet and mattress pad for easy laundering. Performance fabrics and leather are resilient choices for family rooms. Using removable, washable covers and plenty of blankets makes it simple to refresh furniture between deeper cleanings.
Years ago we used white slipcovers even with puppies and kids; they can last when cleaned regularly. The benefit of light covers is that you can see when they need attention and treat stains promptly.

9. What about dog smell?
To keep the house smelling fresh we launder washable throws and blankets often, maintain regular grooming for the dogs, and use natural, plant-based air freshening methods. We prefer pure essential oils in diffusers for gentle, natural scents and avoid synthetic sprays, plug-ins, or candles that can be harmful to pets. Use any oil or scent as directed and consult your veterinarian if you have concerns about specific products and your pets.

Diffusers and washable textiles make a big difference for keeping things fresh without harsh chemicals.
We also use washable throws and blankets widely so they can be removed and laundered when necessary. Regular grooming and cleaning routines reduce odors and keep the home pleasant.

10. Dog noses on windows?
This is a frequent pet peeve—smudges where dogs press their noses. I clean the windows dogs use every day; there are only a couple and it takes a few minutes to keep them clear. Daily quick maintenance prevents buildup and keeps the view nice.

Living with dogs and keeping a pleasant home is a matter of balance: choosing durable materials, establishing simple routines, relying on safe cleaning products, and accepting a bit of imperfection in exchange for the companionship pets give. Small daily habits—brushing, quick laundering of throws, wiping paws when needed, and spot-cleaning—add up to a comfortable, tidy home.
