Hygge: Create a Cozy Winter Home Atmosphere

Hygge & A Cozy Winter House

Long before I learned the word hygge (pronounced HOO-gah) I was already drawn to the same idea: creating a warm, comfortable home and savoring simple pleasures that support well-being. When I first heard the term, I felt an immediate connection—it described the way I like to live. I love building atmosphere through cozy spaces and small daily rituals, and I imagine I would feel right at home in Denmark.

Each year my home goals center on increasing comfort and well-being. This past year has been full of remodeling, and while renovation can be exciting, it’s not the most comfortable season. I’m relieved to be nearing the end of this phase. Although there will always be more projects to tackle, I’m eagerly anticipating a season of calm, cozy living where I can enjoy the comforts we’ve been creating.

I get excited thinking about how soon we’ll be able to fully enjoy these changes and share them with friends and family.

That said, coziness doesn’t happen by accident. If you aren’t intentional about embracing the season’s quieter pleasures, it’s easy to let the winter pass without practicing them. As I write in my book Make Room for What You Love, cultivating the home life you want takes purpose and attention.

After the holidays it’s tempting to feel a little down or to focus on the hardships of cold weather instead of enjoying the blessings of a snug home. We can fall into habits—mindlessly scrolling social media in the evenings rather than mindfully curling up with a favorite book and a soft throw. Those small choices add up, and we can miss chances to make our days feel warmer and more restorative.

Without intention, the atmosphere that felt magical at Christmastime—twinkling lights, candlelight, a crackling fire—can fade. Instead of preserving that warm ambience, we may end up sitting in a dim room lit only by a TV or computer screen.

In January I’ll share more about the art and rituals of creating a cozy winter home, including practical tips for making everyday moments feel more hygge.

For now, keep the lights on a little longer. Sit by the fire. Put your phone down, change into your coziest pajamas, and snuggle up close with the people you love. Small rituals—lighting candles, layering blankets, making a simple hot drink—help turn cold evenings into intentional time for rest and connection.

If you enjoyed these ideas, you’ll find many more seasonal tips and cozy home suggestions in my books, where I explore ways to create a home that supports comfort, connection, and well-being.
