How to Paint Your Staircase and Choose Stylish Runners

My husband has spent the last week or two repainting our small basement staircase, and it’s already making such a difference. When we moved in it was carpeted and not very attractive. A few years ago we removed the carpet and painted the treads a dark gray, but the paint had started to wear and the wood needed filling and sanding. This time we decided to give the stairs a little more attention and a fresh update.

Many of you asked to see process photos, so here is the staircase before and during the repainting.

There’s still more to do—the stairs need additional sanding and wood fill and we’ll paint the surrounding walls—but even now I’m smitten. We painted the stairs white, which brightens the whole stairwell and gives a fresh, light feel. The space is somewhat dark, so the white really lifts it.

Don’t worry about practicality—I’m already scouting the perfect stair runner. I usually prefer exposed wood because it’s easy to clean, but this stairwell doesn’t allow for natural wood right now. Painting white gives that airy look, and a runner will add texture and traction so the dogs won’t slip going up and down. Some stair rugs can be tricky to clean, so we’re focusing on options that are both pretty and low-maintenance.

Today I’m sharing inspiration photos of staircases and runners. For our stairs I’m leaning toward a subtle stripe or a muted plaid, but I haven’t chosen the exact pattern yet.

Do you like stair runners? Even fresh paint can transform a staircase. Are you tackling any painting projects this spring?

Enjoy this inspiration!
