As someone who used to struggle with procrastination and maintaining focus, discovering and practicing core daily routines genuinely changed my life. I needed routines not just to manage the house but to restore joy at home. Daily rituals help me zero in on what must be done so I can complete important tasks and free up time to pursue personal goals.
About seven years ago I shared my basic daily routines on The Inspired Room. By honestly describing my struggles, I realized many others wanted a simplified approach to home management. Since then I’ve learned a great deal about productivity and intentional living. I love sharing what works and hearing how small changes have transformed other people’s lives.
I wasn’t born organized. Even with all the organizing books in the world or a long list of tasks, the only way I became a more disciplined person was by recognizing my habits, struggles, and limits, then finding practical ways to work around them.
A key realization in recent years clarified why I stayed disorganized: I struggled with indecision and a lack of focus. Decluttering was difficult because I hesitated about what to keep and what to let go. Once I learned how to train myself to be more decisive and intentional, I accomplished far more with less stress.
When I trained myself to be more inspired, decisive, and focused in the areas that mattered, everything changed. I still sometimes battle clutter, but I now have reliable, practical strategies to regain focus and stay motivated.

Simple habits and mindsets have improved my home, style, business, and family life in meaningful ways. I enjoy sharing practical strategies that actually work. It’s rewarding to hear when readers feel inspired to take action and simplify their homes and daily lives.
Here are five tips for setting daily routines that can transform your life:
- Be decisive.
Define your goals for home and life clearly. Undefined or unrealistic goals make progress unlikely. To create a calm, organized home you must decide what you want to keep and be intentional about the daily steps that will lead you there. - Commit to discipline.
How you start your day sets its tone. Whether you leave early for work, get kids to school, or work from home, begin with a realistic sense of purpose and follow through with achievable goals. Meaningful change happens when you commit to consistent discipline. - Focus on daily essentials.
You don’t have to do everything; in fact, you shouldn’t. Concentrate on essential daily tasks and stick to them. My daily tasks include making the bed, cleaning the sink, running a load of laundry, and doing one or two short cleaning bursts each day. Everything else is a bonus. - Practice productivity.
Habits take time to form. If you want to be organized and reach your goals, practice regularly. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks—consistent practice makes routines feel effortless and rewarding over time. - Eliminate distractions.
Identify what pulls you away from your goals. Which non-essentials clutter your schedule or home and leave you frazzled? By committing to daily routines you can better manage a busy life. Remove excess and low-priority tasks so you can focus on what matters and transform how you live.
If staying focused, keeping up with housekeeping, or eliminating clutter feels hard, you’ll find practical tips and encouragement in my book Make Room for What You Love. This book approaches home and life goals in a different way than my earlier work and aims to inspire readers to take action.
Many readers tell me they feel so motivated while reading that they get up and start working on their homes right away. That response is the best compliment—I wanted more than a list of tips. My goal was to inspire action so you can see real results.

We created a set of printable worksheets to support several concepts from Make Room for What You Love. These free printables help you set goals, clarify your priorities, and focus your decorating and homemaking efforts. Use them in a home notebook or post them on a command center to keep your intentions visible.
