How to Mix Colors for Fresh Paint Palettes That Pop

Dining Room Pretty Paint PaletteThis post is sponsored by The Home Depot

I often receive emails from readers asking for help choosing color schemes for their homes. There isn’t always a single right answer—there are so many possibilities and personal preferences—but exploring different combinations can help you find a palette that reflects your style. Boldly mixing and matching coordinated paint colors can be a great way to create fresh, inviting rooms.

Paint offers endless opportunities to add personality. For adjoining rooms you can create continuity by repeating similar shades or introduce a surprise with an unexpected contrast. Either approach can make your home feel thoughtfully layered and cohesive.

At my house I usually prefer subtle shifts in tone, though sometimes I enjoy adding a dramatic pop—like the vibrant blue in my office—to change the energy of a space. When I’m shopping for paint I make a point of collecting sample cards and experimenting with palettes to discover combinations that feel right.

The Home Depot recently featured a fall-inspired palette showcased in a dining room that caught my eye. The mix is unexpected: dark mustard walls, a blue-green ceiling, a grey adjoining room, and coral French doors. Crisp white trim balances and brightens the scheme. These are the exact colors used in the room:

  • Door: Glidden Premium® Terra Cotta Rose, GLR31
  • Trim: Glidden Premium® Muslin White, GLC24
  • Wall: BEHR Premium Plus Ultra® Madagascar, UL1803
  • Ceiling: Behr Ultra Premium® Zen, UL220-14

All of these paint colors are available exclusively at The Home Depot®.

How would you switch up this room using the same color palette?
