How to Live Like You’re in the South of France

Alright. I’ll admit it — I’m a dreamer when it comes to my home. As a kid I imagined living in a castle, and while I’ve grown up enough to know I probably won’t end up in a chateau in the South of France, I still love to create that feeling in my everyday life. I enjoy bringing touches of that fantasy into my ordinary house on a small lot in Washington. Call it nostalgia, call it imagination — I like feeling like the girl who lives in her dream home, even if reality looks a little different.

Do you ever imagine a different version of where you live? A mental picture that adds grand architecture, lush gardens, or carefully chosen furniture to your ordinary space? Those daydreams can be a fun way to stay inspired and keep improving your home, even if you live in a typical suburban house. Small changes and thoughtful pieces can go a long way toward creating the atmosphere you crave.

Recently we visited Victoria and toured the beautiful Empress Hotel, which put me in the mood for a French summer retreat—perhaps something like the chateau pictured above, perched overlooking the sea. It’s indulgent, yes, but isn’t that the point of a daydream? I imagine entertaining friends there, tucking visitors into a guest wing, and savoring the view. Until that fantasy becomes reality, I’m bringing the style home with a few inspired pieces.

French Inspired Home Decor

A few items from a Martha Stewart sale at One Kings Lane caught my eye—pieces that can add a South of France vibe without a full renovation. Thoughtfully chosen furnishings and accessories help create that elegant, relaxed look: classic silhouettes, natural textures, and refined details that feel timeless.

You can find these and similar items at One Kings Lane. A helpful tip: many items on sale are limited in quantity and move quickly, so if something captures your heart it’s wise to act soon. Even if a specific piece sells out, new treasures arrive often, so there’s always an opportunity to discover something lovely that fits your vision.
