It’s been a while since I last wrote about hanging plates on the wall, and because I get asked about it often (and keep adding more plates myself), I wanted to share an updated, practical guide.

Over the years I’ve tried several methods, and the most reliable option I’ve found for most plates and bowls are adhesive plate hangers paired with small picture hangers for the wall.
These adhesive hangers come in multiple sizes, so check the weight of the piece you’re hanging and choose the appropriate size.
They’re simple to apply and have held up well for me. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and allow the glue to cure overnight to ensure a secure bond.
I keep small picture hangers on hand to support the hanging hardware on the wall. The smaller picture hangers work beautifully for plates: they look neater than exposed hooks or nails and are gentler on plaster walls.
What I like about adhesive plate hangers—aside from their holding strength—is that they’re largely invisible and won’t damage plates or walls when used correctly. In the past I used wire hangers, but those tend to push the plate away from the wall, can scratch surfaces, and the metal clamps are often visible from the front.
Applied properly, the adhesive hangers are not visible from the front of the plate, which keeps the presentation clean and elegant.
To make sure a plate or bowl sits flat against the wall, I position the adhesive disc on the back as shown in the photo below, placing it where the hanging point will naturally balance the piece.
Plates on a wall feel like small works of art and are an affordable, personal way to decorate. Thrift stores and secondhand shops are great places to find unique plates that add character without spending much.
You can mix a few plates into a gallery wall to soften the grid of rectangles, or hang a single special piece to create a focal point. For a bolder statement, cover a whole wall with mismatched plates, or display a set of family china you don’t use at the table. Either approach turns everyday objects into meaningful decor.
