Early in the year I like to set aside some time to consider goals for our home. Many of us think about personal resolutions when a new year begins, but it’s equally valuable to set intentions for the places we live.
Where should you begin?
I recommend starting by reflecting on the past year. Looking back from a place of gratitude helps you see what’s already working and what you might want to change. The last year likely held challenges and surprises, but also lessons, small victories, and moments that shaped your family life and your home.
Next, consider what will matter most to your household in the coming months. While it’s impossible to predict everything that will happen, think about the priorities you can anticipate. How will your home best serve your needs this year?

Maybe you’re expecting a new addition to the family, or perhaps children will be leaving home. Maybe work-from-home has become permanent and you need to carve out a functional office. Or maybe the constant stress of the world has left you craving simplicity and calm, so you want to declutter and create a more peaceful environment.
Are there improvements you should make this year to protect your home’s value or to support your family’s well-being?

Spend time identifying how you want your home to feel. To me, the way a home feels is often more important than how it looks. Should it feel cozy, comforting, bright, or calm? Choose a few words that capture the atmosphere you want, or write one clear sentence describing that feeling.
Once you have that emotional direction, list specific projects, memories you want to prioritize, and areas you plan to declutter or reorganize. Concrete steps make goals achievable and give you a roadmap to follow through the year.
Each year I share a simple Home Goals worksheet to help with this process. It’s a practical tool you can save and revisit, so you can check progress and stay focused on the intentions you set.
