Coastal Cottage Bedroom Refresh: Vintage Nightstands & Wicker Mirror

Wood Beaded Chandelier

Late this summer I added a few new and secondhand pieces to our bedroom, and I’m finally sharing a small update as we head into fall.

If you missed my earlier posts, one of my favorite finds this year was a secondhand Ethan Allen Quincy bed from Facebook Marketplace. I never expected to find my dream bed so quickly, but there it was. It feels like it belongs in our home—the graceful, wave-like curves suit our island setting overlooking the Salish Sea in Washington, and the chunky solid wood frame brings a grounded, substantial presence. The robin’s egg blue finish keeps the room soft and serene.

Once the bed was in place I started thinking about nightstands. The white ones we had were too wide and didn’t suit the scale or style I wanted. This is a compact room and there’s very limited space on either side of the bed, so I needed narrow, appropriately sized pieces.

On a walk a few weeks later we popped into a vintage shop that was closing. I wasn’t expecting much, but I found a small table that was just the right height and proportions—a warm wood tone that complements the bed. It was a one-of-a-kind find, not a matched pair, but that’s part of what gives a room character. When pieces aren’t identical, the space feels more collected and personal.

I only found one of that style, but I planned to hunt for a similar-sized table for the other side so the pair would be intentionally mismatched. We already had a pair of small white lamps to use, and two vintage plates to hang above the nightstands, so mixing the tables felt like the right choice.

The next day we visited a local vintage market and I spotted another table that matched the size perfectly. It’s a slightly darker wood with a scalloped edge—a small detail that echoes the bed’s curves and makes the room feel cohesive. It was an inexpensive find and fits the space beautifully.

As autumn approached I also wanted a full-length mirror. Our closet is tiny and we didn’t have an adequate mirror in the bedroom or bathroom. I found a textured floor mirror whose subtle curves complement the bed and other furniture. It can lean against the wall or be secured for safety, and its coastal texture suits the room’s style.

The bookcase in the room is an older piece we’ve had for years; it once lived in my dad’s office. We painted it white when we moved, and its shape and base curves work nicely with the other furnishings. It ended up in the bedroom by necessity but has been valuable for storage and displaying a few favorite items.

I’ve also kept a teal chair in the room for many years; it’s comfortable and often occupied by Lily. She’s started spending more time on the bed lately, likely because she enjoys being closer to us now that she’s our only pup. It’s sweet to see her settle in and feel safe.

You’re invited: this fall in HomeBody Gathering Place we’re exploring practical, impactful design principles. I create exclusive lessons and lead weekly sessions to help members improve their homes. Participants can post photos, ask questions, and work on rooms together in a supportive community.

This October we’ll choose one room from the community to transform into a cozier sanctuary. I’ll share tips and document updates as I refresh a room in our home that I haven’t shared much here. It’s a fun, collaborative way to make progress and learn together.
