Helping Your Dog Settle Into a New Home Quickly and Calmly

Some of you have asked how Burger is settling into the new house. Short answer: great. A slightly more whimsical answer: simply splendid.

It only took him a day or two to find his food bowl and learn which door to wait at when he needs to go out. Otherwise he’s been happily exploring (and re-exploring) his favorite spots. Here are some photos from the past two months that show how much he loves his new home.

This photo was taken soon after we moved in. He quickly claimed this sun-warmed corner of the living room rug and would park himself there every morning.

It was part of his personal GTL routine—growl, tan, lick—yes, we watch Jersey Shore because it’s my wife’s home state.

When the new sectional, Karl, started blocking that sunspot, Burger adapted and found other sunny places, including the windowsill. He’s such a cat sometimes. Here he’s curled up with Clara’s hospital blanket—we brought it home so he could get used to her scent and it’s become his official blankie.

On cold mornings he often moves into one of our laps, which is a win-win for everyone.

Sometimes he “supervises” Clara during playtime—though supervision often turns into a nap. But if a sound comes from outside, all howl breaks loose. See what I did there? I replaced h-e-double-hockey-sticks with the word howl. Booyah.

When he’s not campaigning for the laziest chihuahua title, he helps with “quality control” on new purchases. For example, he tested our duvet:

He also approved the new sectional pillows—before the sectional arrived we tossed them on the sleeper sofa in the office and Burger immediately took them for a test ride.

He still finds time to play, usually with his favorite toy: Divalectible. It was actually a gift for Clara, but Burger fell in love with it. Don’t judge the name—Divalectible is the Beanie Baby name and somehow it stuck. Also, Sherry makes a funny excited noise to call him that I jokingly call her “excited dolphin call.” It gets him running every time.

Despite a whole new house to explore, Burger still spends much of his day under the covers. So while the surroundings have changed, we’ve definitely still got the same old Burger.

That’s what our oldest kiddo has been up to when he’s not “supervising” paint or demo projects around the house. Life’s good when you’re an eight-pound chihuahua.

Psst—if all goes well we might have another post today or tomorrow. We’ve finally started making progress on the guest bedroom with just six days until the in-laws arrive, so we’re likely working as you read this. And Burger’s probably supervising.
