Beautiful kitchen and freestanding island from Williams Sonoma
Greetings! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Last week I shared some floor plan ideas and enjoyed imagining the possibilities for our kitchen layout. I’ll return soon with more plans for other parts of the house — including where a second bathroom might fit on the main floor — but this week I want to focus on kitchen islands.
In a previous home I had a custom island built on site by a cabinetmaker for our English Tudor kitchen. It was one of my favorite features: dovetailed drawers for ample storage, built-in shelves for cookbooks, and a Brazilian cherry countertop that made the island feel like a piece of furniture rather than just cabinetry.
In our last house we refurbished an unfinished freestanding island. It wasn’t as elaborate as the built-in island, but it was charming and incredibly useful. Those experiences taught me that a well-chosen island can change how a kitchen functions and feels.
For now I’m resisting designing or buying a new island until our remodel plans are finalized and we know the exact dimensions of the space. Meanwhile, I’ve been browsing freestanding islands and kitchen carts that work in a variety of kitchens — from small spaces to larger open layouts.
Movable or rolling islands are especially versatile. They offer extra counter and prep space, additional storage, and the flexibility to rearrange the kitchen as needed. If your kitchen is compact, there are foldable or slim-profile options that tuck neatly against a wall or into a corner when not in use. Several models even include convenient features like drawers, shelves, and towel racks, and some retailers offer free shipping with quick delivery if you want a fast update.
Do you have a kitchen island or dream about adding one?

Below is a selection of freestanding islands and carts I found useful while researching. These range from compact rolling carts to substantial island pieces that can anchor a kitchen. Consider scale, materials, and storage needs when choosing one for your space.

If you want additional ideas, look for photo tours and roundups showcasing freestanding islands in a variety of styles and layouts. Seeing how others use portable islands can spark ideas for storage solutions, surface materials, and placement in your own kitchen.
Whether you prefer a custom-built piece that feels like furniture or a practical rolling cart that adds instant function, a freestanding island can be a beautiful and flexible addition to many kitchens. Take measurements, think about workflow and storage priorities, and choose a piece that complements your style while solving practical needs.
