Awhile ago I had a Home Depot gift card from a return and wanted to use it. Wandering the garden center for a bit of spring, I found a Fiddle Leaf Fig. I don’t have a green thumb, but I love having plants around. My mom and grandmother always kept trees and plants inside and out, so they feel like home to me.
I love the large, dark green leaves—pruned into a tree shape—which add a bold pop of color and a sculptural presence to the room.

The plant fit perfectly in the basket we used for our woodland Christmas tree, so that’s its current container. I considered using an old decorative pot but didn’t have one handy. For now I placed a disposable roasting pan under the plant to catch any water. I water it about once a week and so far it’s doing well — I’ve had it for only a couple of months and it’s still alive, which feels like a small victory.
Some leaves have a few brownish edges. I’m not certain what causes them yet; it could be watering, light, or humidity. I plan to look into causes and fixes so I can help the tree thrive.

I’m not sure the fiddle leaf will be happy next to the fireplace long term, but with spring here and the fireplace used less, I’m giving it a try. If it doesn’t do well, I may move it to a front room window where it will receive more consistent light. For now, it fills an otherwise bare corner in the family room and brings life to the space.
I’ve added a few other houseplants recently as well, including small coffee table plants and teacup gardens, which add variety and charm throughout the house.
Do you know anything about Fiddle Leaf Figs and how to care for them?
