Do It or Don’t: Making the Right Choice Every Time

When we moved into this house, I collected lots of ideas for updating this room.

I imagined everything from a window seat and built-in bookcases to trim work, refinished floors, a new fireplace surround and a fireplace insert for cozy fall evenings.

So many plans!

So little time and budget.

We’ve completed many other projects around the house (you can find several of them in my project roundups), but this room has evolved more slowly than I first envisioned.

For now, simple updates have been plenty. Instead of rebuilding the fireplace, we painted it—twice—and it made a big difference.

Rather than installing a built-in window seat, we bought a rattan daybed that we love (the dogs love it too!).

We haven’t added trim yet, but a fresh coat of paint and new window shades refreshed the room and brightened the space.

Every so often we rearrange rugs, furniture, art and lamps. Those small changes help us experiment until the room feels just right.

(Recently I shared our thoughts on the new white sofa—I’ve been pleased with how it’s held up and how it feels in the room.)

I continue to think of new possibilities for this room—that’s part of the fun—but I’ve also learned to be content with how it is now. It’s comfortable, inviting, relaxing and cozy.

There’s value in embracing simplicity and appreciating what you already have instead of always chasing the next update or trend.

When I do make bigger changes, I want them to be thoughtful and meaningful. I prefer updates that reflect our needs and bring lasting joy rather than quick fixes to follow trends.

One question I’m still considering is whether to redesign the fireplace wall. Part of me wants a more dramatic change; part of me is happy with the simple look we have now.

What do you think? If this were your home, would you update this wall? What ideas would you consider for the fireplace, or would you leave it as is?

Do you ever wrestle with making design decisions in your home?
