DIY Holiday Wipe-Off Message Plate: Reusable Festive Sign Tutorial

I was looking for something tall to place on my buffet — a piece that would be shorter than my lamp but taller than a pitcher I might add greenery to later. I remembered the easel that came with my DaySpring message board, which I hadn’t needed after hanging the board on the wall.

But what to display on the easel? I wanted a quick solution that looked intentional.

In a spur-of-the-moment idea, I grabbed an inexpensive holiday charger — likely made of plastic or lightweight metal — and set it on the easel. The charger filled the vertical space nicely and created a simple focal point.

I imagined a vinyl holiday word would look perfect, but I didn’t have one on hand. Instead, I reached for a chalkboard pen to write directly on the charger. The pen performed beautifully — the message showed up clearly, and when I want to change it, the ink wipes off easily.

This is a fast, flexible option when you want a seasonal message without a permanent commitment. A vinyl cling would be a great upgrade if you prefer a more finished look, but the chalk pen is ideal for last-minute decorating and lets you switch messages whenever you like. The effect is similar to chalkboard chargers, but without painting anything.

I really like these chalk markers. They worked well on my charger and cleaned off without issue. Since the charger was inexpensive, it was a low-risk experiment that paid off.

Total cost: Free (if you already have a chalk pen and a plate).
Total stress: None.
