I always planned to have an upholstered cushion made for our dining bench, but I didn’t want to rush into a custom cover. Custom work can be costly, so I decided to wait and choose fabric thoughtfully. In the meantime, I discovered a simple, affordable DIY no-sew bench cushion solution that has worked perfectly. I’m finally sharing the method and photos so you can try it too.

One late evening last year, my daughter Courtney and I made our DIY no-sew bench cushion using a slab of foam and a foam-cutting tool. I snapped a few photos, even though it was dark, so you can see the foam and the knife we used.

The foam we used is free of flame retardants, which is important if anyone might nap or rest on the bench cushion. They also offer custom sizes now, so you may be able to order a single piece that fits your bench without joining two sections.

I’ll list additional sources from this room at the end of the post.

A dedicated foam-cutting knife made trimming the foam quick and easy. If you don’t have a specialized tool, a sharp saw that handles foam will work as well.

The process is straightforward: order the foam in a size close to what you need, lay it out on the bench, and mark where to cut using a pen and ruler. Our bench was shallower than the foam, so we trimmed the foam to fit. Precision isn’t critical—just aim for straight edges and a good fit.

Because our bench is long, we used two foam pieces to span the entire seat. If you can order a longer single piece, that will simplify the project. Once the foam is cut to size, cover it with a throw or blanket to create a finished cushion.

I recently fell in love with washable plaid blankets and realized they make the coziest, most inviting covers for the dining bench. They come in multiple colors, so you can easily switch up the look seasonally. I used two throws for our bench and tucked the edges in at the back and sides for a tidy appearance.

The bench has a small ledge that helps keep the cushion in place, so tucking the blanket on the front works well. If your bench lacks a ledge, you can simply let the throw hang over the edge—just avoid draping it too far down if you need access to drawers underneath.

This bench seat hack was my parents’ idea and I think it’s brilliant. I looked for pre-made cushions but most ready-made options were too short for our long bench. Cutting your own foam means you can customize the dimensions to suit your space perfectly.

My throws haven’t been washed yet, so some creases remain, but they will smooth out after laundering. Using washable blankets makes this solution practical for everyday life—if someone spills, simply toss the cover in the wash and you’re done. I typically choose narrow quilts or throws if my bench is shallower to avoid excess overhang.

I also like using reversible patterned blankets for a quick change of style. Wool blankets are another favorite for colder weather thanks to their weight and cozy texture.

I’m not a devoted DIYer, but this project was easy enough for even a beginner. The low cost and quick result meant we could use the bench immediately rather than waiting and spending money on a custom cushion. Even if I eventually order a tailored cushion, I’ll likely keep a blanket over it for added protection and a layered look.

We have another bench in the living room with a custom cushion and cover. I still use throws there to change the style quickly—right now it’s wrapped with a thin reversible blanket and layered with a plaid throw on top. This flexibility keeps the space feeling fresh without extra expense.

After living with our DIY dining bench cushion for almost a year, I may delay investing in a custom seat even longer. The foam-and-throw approach is comfortable, low-maintenance, and gives the bench a warm, casual charm that suits everyday family life.
