Do you have a signature scent for your home, or a favorite seasonal fragrance you return to every year?
Last week I mixed a “Lavender Vanilla + Lime” linen spray to freshen our sheets and towels. It smells like a late spring day—light, clean, and so refreshing. The simple recipe is below.
I’ve mentioned before that while I’m not especially crafty, I love to putter around the house. There’s something about small, intentional projects that makes a space feel more lived-in and welcoming. For me, that often includes scent: making the house smell delightful is as important as how it looks.
I started sharing thoughts about signature home scents early on with the blog and in my first book, Love the Home You Have. In my newer book, Dwelling, I talk about how natural scents woven into daily life can lift our mood and make ordinary moments feel special. A pleasant scent is a tiny, daily gift to yourself.
Custom linen and room sprays are quick to make and fun to personalize. Unlike more complicated DIYs that can end in frustration (I once super-glued my fingers together—don’t ask!), a linen spray is simple, satisfying, and practically mess-free.
Creating a signature scent for linens is a small home project that brings a lot of joy. Simple pleasures go a long way.

Below is the blend I love right now. I keep it in a small spray bottle and mist linens and towels when I make the bed or before turning in for the night. The scent helps me relax and feel cozy—perfect for winding down.

Lavender Vanilla + Lime Linen Spray:
– 10 drops Lavender essential oil
– 10 drops Stress Away blend (a blend with lime and vanilla notes)
– Use a 1 oz spray bottle
– Pinch of sea salt (optional)
– Fill the remainder with filtered or distilled water
Add the oils to the bottle, add the pinch of salt if using, fill with water, cap, shake, and spray as desired.
I lightly mist sheets and towels before making the bed and again before bedtime. The scent is gentle and soothing—perfect for helping create a restful atmosphere.
Tip: Store your spray in a cool, dark place and give it a quick shake before each use to help disperse the oils.

I use high-quality essential oils for the best fragrance and consistency. Bottles and simple accessories make the project easier and more enjoyable—small clear or colored glass spray bottles work well.
If you enjoy making linen sprays, you might also like creating seasonal variations: swap the lime for bergamot or grapefruit in warmer months, or add a few drops of cedarwood and orange for a cozy autumn blend.
Decor and accessory ideas
A few small touches—pretty bottles, ceramic canisters, or a simple salt keeper—can make the process feel special and keep your supplies organized. Decorative creamers, bowls, and lamps can help tie the space together while keeping essentials handy.
Small design changes and a signature scent can make any home feel more personal and comforting. Enjoy experimenting to find a fragrance that feels like yours.
