There’s a special charm to the thin, slightly translucent pages of an old dictionary. Even though we rarely use print dictionaries anymore, their texture and rows of letters make them perfect for creating understated, vintage-inspired art. This simple DIY transforms pages that might otherwise be discarded into attractive, framed pieces that add character to any room.
Materials
- Old dictionary (available at thrift stores or secondhand shops)
- Printer or photocopier
- Printed clip art or a simple graphic you like
- Paper trimmer or scissors
- Mat and frame
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Find a dictionary. Choose a well-worn volume with thin, onion-skin pages. Thrift stores often have plenty for a low price.
Step 2: Select the page. Pick a page with words or entries that appeal to you—perhaps a word that has special meaning, or simply a page with a pleasing layout of text.
Step 3: Remove and trim the page. Carefully tear out the chosen page and trim any ragged edges so it sits flat and looks neat in the frame.
Step 4: Choose or create an image. Look for simple clip art, a silhouette, or another image with clean lines. Black-and-white images work especially well over the fine print.
Step 5: Print the image onto the page. If your printer can handle thin paper without jamming, feed the dictionary page through the printer and print directly onto it. Otherwise, make a photocopy of the dictionary page and print the image onto the copy. Position the image so the underlying words remain visible and interesting.
Step 6: Mat and frame. Once the ink is dry, place the page in a mat and frame it. A simple frame and neutral mat let the text and image stand out, creating a timeless piece of wall art.
Tips
- If you have several pages you like, create a small gallery wall with matching frames.
- Experiment with different image sizes and positions to highlight specific words or definitions on the page.
- Use archival mats and UV-protective glass if you want the piece to last without fading.
This easy project is a great way to repurpose an old dictionary into personalized, budget-friendly artwork. It’s quick, adaptable, and adds a thoughtful, vintage touch to any space.
