Design a Cozy Home Sanctuary: Tips to Create Your Happy Space

Happy Place

Do you have a happy place inside your home? Maybe it’s a favorite chair where you rest and find peace, a room that brings you joy, or a quiet corner you retreat to when you need energy or inspiration.

In my “homebody manifesto,” I shared how we’re often encouraged to practice self-care by going somewhere away from home. While travel or time away can be restorative—on a beach, in the mountains, or at a relaxing hotel—there’s something powerful about cultivating happiness where you live.

I feel my best when I create restorative spaces at home. Home is where much of our life happens, and small daily choices there can shape how we feel. My book Dwelling explores how to feel well where you live, focusing not only on rooms and décor but also on how we care for ourselves in our everyday surroundings.

A perfectly styled room or new furniture can certainly be uplifting, but a happy spot doesn’t require every item to be ideal. Often it’s the simple, intentional choices that matter most.

Sometimes creating a happy place means claiming one clutter-free corner just for yourself.

Other times it’s arranging a single shelf or grouping a few meaningful objects that lift your mood in an imperfect space.

Sometimes it’s a shift in perspective—cultivating the mindset to notice and appreciate the gifts in the space right in front of you.

People and pets also bring happiness into a home. No matter where or how you find joy at home, having at least one spot you can visit to soak in a little happiness is a gift to yourself.

In my own house, my happiest place is usually curled up on the living room sofa. It’s where my family and pups gather, and during the day and at sunset I enjoy the light and view through our windows. That connection to light and the outdoors lifts my mood.

We intentionally placed the sofa in a spot that faces the windows and added a bench in the dining room for another view. Those small layout choices have made a noticeable difference in my well-being.

Perfect design isn’t required. What matters most are the choices we make to improve how we feel at home—arranging light, view, furniture, and belongings in ways that support rest, connection, and joy.

Where is your happy place at home? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

If you’re not sure where your happy spot might be, consider creating a small nook for more joy this week.
