Decoupage Easter Eggs with Paper Napkins: Step-by-Step Spring Craft

I have a simple and cheerful Easter craft to share.

I actually bought these supplies two years ago planning to make them, and my daughter Courtney and I finally finished the project this week.

If you have Prime, there’s still time to order the supplies before Easter. If not, save this for next year—or order ahead so you’re ready when inspiration strikes.

Quick disclaimer: I’m not a DIY professional, but I think these turned out very cute.

Materials we used:

Wooden eggs

Paintbrushes

Decorative cocktail napkins in various patterns (forest animals, blue birds, succulents, pink floral, floral)

Gloss varnish or decoupage medium

I gathered all the items I used plus a few extras in one place to make it easy to recreate.

How we made them:

  • Separate the napkin layers and use only the top printed layer.
  • Tear the napkin into small pieces instead of cutting—the torn edges blend more naturally.
  • Brush a thin layer of varnish onto the wooden egg.
  • Gently place a napkin piece on the egg, then brush another thin layer of varnish over it to smooth and seal the paper.
  • Continue, overlapping pieces slightly, until the egg is covered.

Helpful tips we learned:

  • Use less varnish rather than more—too much can cause the paper to wrinkle.
  • Work with a light touch when brushing to avoid tearing delicate napkin pieces.
  • If small wrinkles appear, embrace them; they add character and charm.
  • Let the eggs dry on parchment paper; a plate can sometimes cause sticking.
  • Smaller napkin pieces are easier to apply around curves.
  • Wear gloves if you don’t want varnish on your fingers, or keep a damp cloth nearby for quick cleanup.

Ways to display and use them:

  • Arrange the decorated eggs in a bowl as a centerpiece.
  • Scatter them along a table runner or incorporate them into a spring centerpiece.
  • Use them as whimsical place settings for a holiday meal.
  • Tuck them into baskets, wreaths, or small spring vignettes.

This project is also perfect for a gathering—pre-cut napkins and varnish, set out brushes and eggs, and let guests create their own designs.
