Photos in this post: New England Home

Before I begin decorating or remodeling a house, I like to imagine how it should feel in every season. Since we recently bought our new home, I’ve spent a lot of time picturing life here—packing and daydreaming as we move our belongings in. For autumn and winter, I picture a warm, welcoming seaside bed-and-breakfast vibe: a place to return to after a day of exploring, warm up by the fire, and settle into a comfortable chair for reading, music, or lively conversation over hot cider and small plates.

I already love calling this house home, and I’m excited to make it our own. While searching for inspiration, I found a lovely guest house on Martha’s Vineyard featured in New England Home. The photos in this post are from that feature, and they sparked a lot of cozy ideas and fall feelings I wanted to share.

I often study interiors from many sources and styles. Observing different approaches helps me refine my own taste and inspires more interesting, layered rooms. Below are photographs I enjoy, each followed by a brief list of design details that stood out to me. I call this the observation game—a practice I’ve shared since the early days of The Inspired Room in 2007. Noticing classic, well-made design can feed your creativity for years.
