Cleaning Stainless Steel Appliances: A Simple Pro Tip for Sparkling Results

How to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances

Ihave owned stainless steel appliances for more than eight years and have learned a few practical lessons about keeping them looking their best. Fingerprints, smudges and streaks can make even high-end appliances appear neglected. Manufacturer guides often recommend specialized stainless steel cleaners and caution against certain chemicals that could harm the finish, which can make maintenance feel complicated.

In practice, though, I’ve found a surprisingly simple solution: standard glass cleaner. Windex and similar products, used with soft paper towels or microfiber cloths, have consistently removed fingerprints and grime from the fronts of my appliances. After years of use, I have not seen damage to the appliance finish when cleaning this way. It’s effective, quick and widely available, which makes it a convenient choice for routine upkeep.

That said, not all stainless steel is created equal. For example, our stainless-looking sink has been difficult to maintain; it developed rust and staining that ordinary glass cleaner did not fix. Some sinks and lower-quality stainless finishes respond differently to cleaning products, so results can vary. If a surface looks or feels different than typical appliance stainless, a different approach or a product specifically formulated for that material may be necessary.

If you decide to use glass cleaner or any product on your appliances, proceed with care and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when possible. Test in an inconspicuous area first, use a soft cloth to avoid scratching, and avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that could dull or damage the finish.

I particularly appreciate how clean and durable the interior of my Electrolux dishwasher looks — it stays shiny and easy to maintain. For many appliances, regular wiping with a gentle cleaner and a soft cloth will keep surfaces looking fresh without heavy effort.

If you were choosing a finish for a new kitchen, would you pick stainless steel or another option? What finish would you choose and why?
