I was browsing The Inspired Room book this weekend and noticed how many of the same decor pieces and furniture still work in my home. Over the years I’ve received so many messages from readers who recognize items I already own and see how I style them in different ways. My goal is to show that you don’t need to buy everything new to achieve a refreshed look—sometimes the simplest changes make the biggest difference.
On Instagram it’s common to see full room makeovers where nearly every item is replaced each season. For most people that’s neither practical nor sustainable. I’ve written about treating decorating as a slow process in How to Decorate: The Slow Process to a Style You’ll Love, and I believe the best approach for most homes is to build a foundation of timeless pieces you love, then add or swap accents over time.
Of course there are times when a new purchase is the right choice. When I do buy something new, I make sure it mixes easily with what I already own. I treat key furniture as an investment rather than disposable, and I choose simple, classic lines so pieces stay relevant for years. If every item in a room is trendy, the room will date quickly; but if your core pieces are neutral and enduring, you can introduce a trend or two without overhauling the whole space.
Right now I’m rearranging my living room to get a fresh feel without buying anything new. I’ll share photos of the new layout soon.
Meanwhile, here are several items I’ve purchased over the past 1–20 years that I consider classic, staple pieces.
Many are on sale today and have remained useful and stylish through multiple seasons.

Five timeless pieces I’ve purchased in the last 1–20 years:
Leather Sofa (on sale!)
Glass Lamp (on sale!)
Slipcovered Sofa (on sale!)
Leather Ottoman (similar, on sale!)
Cane Bed

1. Leather Sofa
My leather sofa has become softer and more comfortable with age. I have the loveseat in a warm toffee tone that has worn beautifully. Even if an exact color or size is discontinued, a classic leather sofa with that same character will remain a versatile, long-lasting choice for living rooms.

2. Slipcovered Sofa
We chose a deep 80-inch slipcovered sofa in warm white denim for a relaxed, comfortable look. Slipcovers give flexibility and can be refreshed or replaced if you want a different color or fabric later. I’ve written more about my white slipcovered couch and why I chose it.

3. Leather Ottoman
A leather ottoman is a practical multipurpose piece: it serves as a footrest, extra seating, or a low coffee table. The leather we chose has held up well and complements both modern and traditional furnishings.

4. Blue Glass Lamp
We own the larger size of this blue glass lamp. A distinctive lamp can become a focal point on a side table or console while still fitting into a variety of design schemes thanks to its simple form and color.

5. Cane Bed
A cane bed offers texture and warmth in a bedroom. It’s available in a couple of color options, and its understated design pairs well with many bedding styles and accessories, making it a versatile long-term choice.
